Open interest is the total value of open futures bets in the market. Rising open interest means new money is piling in; falling open interest means positions are being closed.
The combination with price is what matters. Price up + open interest up = new buyers entering (healthy trend). Price up + open interest down = short sellers being squeezed out (weaker rally). Price down + open interest up = new shorts piling in. The AI analyst on this site reads this for you and shows the open interest line under the chart.
Funding rates are small payments between futures traders that keep futures prices in line with spot. When funding is strongly positive, longs are paying shorts — the crowd is betting heavily on rises, often a warning sign of overconfidence. Strongly negative funding means the crowd is betting on falls.
Extreme funding in either direction often precedes a move the other way, because one-sided crowds get liquidated. It's a contrarian indicator at the extremes.
Key points to remember
- Open interest = total open futures bets
- Price + OI together reveal the trend's health
- Funding shows which way the crowd is leaning
- Extreme funding often precedes a reversal
